Old School Auto Upholstery Techniques

I have been doing Auto Upholstery on my own since 1980. Being self-taught from an early age. I have always been guarded to share any of my knowledge because of competition, but now I realize that I am near the end of my lifelong career. I see so many "How To" videos from people who don't have much experience thinking they are the experts giving some questionable advice. I have decided to make videos of my real-world experiences as they happen. As I work, techniques will surface and this is what I will be pointing out. "A technique is something that is learned from experience over time" Sorry to say that I will not be responding to comments that are hateful.

Thanks for the tour for a day in the life of Old School Upholstery in East Texas. Having the work area right there, well, to me, that is old school for sure. Was that a B-25 plane in the shop ? When I went sky diving, about 30 years ago, there was a much older guy at the airport, who had a B-25 belt buckle on, so I had time and asked him, what is the story ? He told me, he was in WW2 toward the end and his missions were flown in a B-25. - Maybe we get to Oshkosh one year ??

Now how do you cut 1” softer foam, and cutting inner and outer curves. Hacksaw blade don’t do anything
Hello Xx, I cut 1" foam, low medium and high density all the time with no problem. Sometimes with memory foam as an example, it can be cut in combination of hack saw blade and scissors. Like I always say, it's not rocket science. Hehe Please keep liking and watching!

Can’t you take a wire wheel to that?
Hello Eugene, You could if you want to, but I have need doing this 44 years and I would say that I never would. The wire wheel will load up in seconds, and the fiberglass type headliner base like this one would be destroyed. If I had an easier way of scraping the foam, I would do it that way. Just sayin'. OK how many hours of labor did that headliner take you or you charged the customer. How much do you guys charge for labor in Texas on that job?

I just bought the HF Spray gun. the instructions say not to run it over 45 PSI. I notice a valve on yours but no gage? can you tell me how you regulate it? I have been doing leather for years by painting on the glue ( Very Messy) I hope this works for me.
Hello Dag, I use an air regulator. My guess is 20-65 psi is usable, depending on if a project is large or small. I just get a feel of what air pressure is right for what I am doing. You will know too. Or get a regulator with a gauge. Please keep liking and watching! Please keep liking and watching!

i did that on my old xj, but added extra padding to the bolsters for a sporting look when I deleted the sliders & lowered the suspension ~4". The seats lowered ~3" with the sliders gone. They did not move, so I put the seats where I wanted. I also put on shorter tires, which made it quicker, and lowered it more. I made my 2 door/2wd XJ SUV into a fast(er) 3 door hatchback car.

Would those be the same and pop off on a chevelle i neverous to pop them off and have rust atound the bottom clips and need to take off and sand what do recommend boss ? And sense i have to treat it might as well replace the top but looks brown under it hope not more rust

Heat up that tube of urethane... Put it in a bucket of hot water or in the sun. You won't have to squeeze so hard.

my daughters car got both windshield and back glass blown out by baseball size hail... i build transmissions for a junkyard so they gave me the glass free... been told to heat the urethane first and electric gun... i found the Ryobi 18v at home depot was only $39 on sale...that thing worked great actually came out a little to fast... i spent more time vacuuming glass then installing the windows... cheers... keep up the geat work...

Great result!! 👏👏👏 As I have read in another comment, there are other types of caulking guns which are more robust, meant for thicker adhesives or silicones, with a different design, that allows to use them easier, with less force. Here in Spain, a normal gun costs between 2 and 5 dollars and the stronger one about 15 - 20 dollars, and they make life easier, so I strongly recommend you to get one, for next similar job 😉😉

Had this issue when I was young and unfamiliar with glass and convertible tops or soft tops. Person used airplane glue and while it worked it wasn’t pretty.

Greetings from Big D.. would it help to warm the tube? I am a DIY type, snd eould cover the glass with paper in case I dribnled some of the adhesive… convertible tops hsve slwsys been a mystery to me. Thanks for this! Stay cool in East Texas. If possible.
